The Chinese Government recently sanctioned 11 of US Lawmakers in Hong Kong. Those sanctioned includes Senators,Representatives and members of Non-profitable Rights organisations however no one from the Trump Administration were sanctioned. This is a retaliation act from China to the US as the US initially sanctioned 11 of Hong kong’s officials from mainland China.
In June China Imposed a National security Law to Hong Kong, The new law key focuses on crimes secessions, subversion,terrorism and collusion with foreign forces turning a blind-eye to the official handover from China to allow Hong kong to keep most of its laws until 2047. The law came into effect from the 31st of June 2020, it has targeted mainly those making opposite views and with the potential to erupt Terrorism and secession. Some books opposing the Law have been removed from Libraries and prohibited to be used in school curriculums as teachers were ordered to keep politics out of the classroom. The US used this law to criticize China, raising concerns over violation of human rights and the suppression of freedom of expression. The US then sanctioned 11 officials from mainland China as a sign of standing in solidarity with the people of Hong kong. However China stood by it’s Law claiming that it was was a good call to stop outside nations from interfering with the democracy of the people of Hong Kong and to prevent protest events.
Media tycoon Jimmy Lai the owner of Apple daily a news outlet that in the past 25 years has been vocal about the freedom of Hong Kong and a frontliner of the the huge protest that took place last year, He is the latest high profile to be arrested,including his son and some of his employees due to the violation of the New security law. Mr Lai is accused of colluding with foreign powers and if found guilty he can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Two largest economic giants in the world have been on each others throats for years, last week President Donald Trump signed a ban on any transaction with the Chinese famous short-video Application Tiktok from Byte Dance technologies, citing security concerns that the Application poses security risks to US users.
The Two states have been battling for Global superiority.
