a young “Gift” to South African football
This year marks 13 years since the tragic death of Gift Mpho Leremi . Gift was a Mamelodi sundowns Midfilelder when he was involved in a fatal accident. He was returning back home after a CAF confederation cup football match in Cameroon, before his life was cut short.
The then 22 year old was discovered by Orlando Pirates when he was playing for Pimville Giants in his place of birth Soweto. He spent Five years before Joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2007. Gift played for the National team’s under 23 and Bafana Bafana.
Car accidents have claimed more football stars in SA.
Lesley Manyatsela was a Orlando Pirates prominent striker from Musina South Africa. He also played for the National team from 2002-2003. At the age of 21 he made 73 appearances in Orlando Pirates and scored a record of 48 goals. His career was cut short following a horrible accident when his car tumbled over and he lost his life. The star won a golden boot award for that season in his honour the Top football goal scorer award was changed to the Lesley Manyathela Golden boot.
Ajax Cape Town’s Cecil Lolo is another South African footballer who lost his life on a fatal car collision. The young star was met by a tragic accident on the Spine road N2 near Khayelithsa. He spent almost half his career with Ajax Cape Town. The 27 year old star was recognised as one of the senior player of the club.
