The Movement for Democratic change (MDC) in Zimbabwe is furiouss over lack of recognition by the Special envoy from South Africa calling it a ‘snub’. President Cyril Ramaphosa sent a special envoy to Zimbabwe to intervene in what is said to be an ongoing violation of human rights.
Former parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbethe and Dr Sydney Mufamadi flew to Zimbabwe to find out what was happening in the country, The special envoy met with President Emmerson Mnangwangwa late last night 10 August 2020, the deligates flew back to South Africa on the same day without meeting with the opposition party MDC, this has stirred outrage on the MDC Alliance, and the party released a media statement : “It is clear that Mr. Mnangangwa is not ready to resolve the national crisis through genuine dialogue. However, the deteriorating plight of the Zimbabwean people means that a political settlement is more urgent than before. We will continue to engage Mr. Mnangangwa to engage in sincere dialogue until the national crisis is resolved.”
Zimbabwe has been engulfed with protests the past weeks against the weak economy and the ongoing human rights violation ,Civil rights society groups and activists were arrested for protesting against the wrong doings by the government. Some journalist were arrested for exposing the corruption taking place within the Government.
Zimbabweans living in South Africa protested at the Zimbabwean Embassy with the same mandate as those back home, under the #NotInMyName movement. South Africans and Zimbabweans living in the country stood in solidarity. Zimbabwean nationals living in South Africa said they were at a better place to speak against the government unlike the ones back home,they claim that in Zimbabwe when you stand against the leading government you are most likely to be arrested, beaten, kidnapped or even as far as being torched. Some claim that numerous Envoys have been previously sent to intervene but there were no positive outcomes.
President Mnangwangwa denied the allegations of any wrong doings to the citizens of Zimbabwe.
