It has been 6 months since South Africa went to a strict Covid-19 lockdown.
Over the past few months, President Cyril Ramaphosa used a form of levels to ease down the lockdown regulations. The national state of disaster was also put in place at the beginning of the lockdown and expired on the 15th of August 2020. Furthermore, the Nation-state of the disaster was also extended as well as the ban on the sales of Alcohol and Tobacco products were lifted.
South Africans are expecting and hoping that President Cyril Ramaphosa would address the nation tonight, with hopes that he would announce a move from Level 2 to Level 1. Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently having a virtual meeting with the National Coronavirus command council (NCCC) on how South Africa handled the pandemic.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has been put under pressure to ease some of the restrictions including opening sectors such as the Entertainment industry. Numerous protests took place across the country, creatives, and Artists chanting #VulaPresident.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said they would advise the cabinet to allow large gatherings and lift the Curfews between 10 pm to 4 am. International travel will also be permitted.
The decline in daily infections and the low rate of fatalities due to Covid-19 are some of the reasons why the country believes it is ready for Level 1.
