The African continent recently topped the 1 Million mark on confirmed covid-19 infections as the Global cases are approaching the 20 Million covid-19 infections mark. Africa is one of the continents in the world that are struggling to contain the Coronavirus outbreak. Since the first recorded case in Africa on the 14th of February 2020 in Egypt, the virus has spread to 52 countries out of 54 in the Continent.
South Africa accounts for over 50% of the Continent’s infections with more than 500 000 confirmed cases, Number 1 in the continent and sitting at Number 5 Globally.
Most of the countries in Africa have poor health care facilities, and testing kits which results in poor response to the outbreak and infection cases under reported. Some of the African countries rely on International donations for Testing kits and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs). The World health organisation and the United Nations have formed an organisation to provide Testing kits and PPEs to 47 countries in Africa.
The Global pandemic posed a devastating impact on African countries, millions of people suffer from hunger and starvation. The WHO estimates 10 000 children will die of malnutrition in the coming months. The Covid-19 lockdowns produced good results in curbing the spread of the virus within the continent but has however reduced the work force and now more people are unemployed making it difficult to survive. More people are expected to lose their lives due Covid-19 related illnesses, hunger, malnutrition and other factors caused by the pandemic.
